Happy Holidays! This giveaway is part of the Gift Giveaway Bash. Check back daily for new giveaways,
Are you a knife person? Me, not so much. I’m not the best cook and I do not claim to have the best knowledge about the utensils that I use in the kitchen. So, I was more than excited when Rada offered to have me test out their kitchen knives.
Rada Cutlery offered to mail a package to me with a silver brushed Aluminum handle Cook’s Knife and black Stainless Steel Regular Pairing Knife. Really?? OK!
First, let me tell you about some of the utensils in my kitchen drawer. Can you say “Hand-Me-Downs”. Yep, pretty much. Most of what I own was either given to me or bought from our local Habitat Home Store for pocket change. A drawer full of mis-matched silver and you’re lucky if it will cut knives.
Time went by and “the package” finally arrived.
Getting the package was very exciting. As I opened it I was immediately shocked by the weight of the Cook’s knife. I carefully opened the protective packaging and was in awe of the actual quality of the knives. Remember, I’m not a great cook and my utensils are not name brand. This is very new territory for me to handle.
I hand off the knives to my husband and quickly flip through the catalog to see how much these knives actually cost. I was shocked!! After already telling myself that these knives probably cost a fortune I was shocked to see that the Cook’s Knife was less than $10.00 and the Regular Paring Knife was less than $5.00.
All this time I’ve been using hand-me-downs and at those prices I could have ones that would actually cut?
How did the knives work when put to the test?
After slicing through my kitchen scrubber when I washed it I immediately told myself that I better be careful because it is obviously more knife than I am used to using. Moving on from the scrubber incident I whipped out some cranberries leftover from Thanksgiving.
I wanted to see how thin the knife would cut and was amazed at how easily and quickly it sliced right through with almost no hassle at all. No fussing or fighting. Just slid right through.
I whipped out some almonds to see if I could manage slicing something with a little more density. When I shaved slivers of that almond right down the side without any trouble at all I was enamored.
I’m sold at this point! Send me to cooking school cause this Mommie needs to learn how to cook with these things. Now, whether these awesome knifes can make my cooking taste any better, that’s another story.
Would I buy anything else from Rada Cutlery?
ASOLUTELY. I have a birthday soon and I’ve already circled several things in the catalog that I would like to have. Waiting that long and narrowing the selections down in another thing entirely.
How can you find out more about Rada Cutlery?

I cut my finger with one of the Rada paring knives while I was washing it. It was a brand new knife so it was extra sharp. My immediate reaction was to shake my hand which splattered blood all over the window shade, cabinets, and me.

ReplyDeleteMy scariest knife story is actually grandmother's. She cut between her thumb and pointer finger while she was cleaning a knife and she ended up having to have surgery because it got crazy infected. :(
ReplyDeleteThis is my brother's, but he was using his Cutco knife and dropped it on the nose of his toy poodle. It was so sad and the dog did not even cry. My brother had to take him to get stitches. :(

I don't have the best knives in the world, so they need sharpening a lot. I can always tell when it's time, because I'll be chopping carrots and instead of cutting them, they slide out from under the blade and jump onto the floor.
ReplyDeleteWe had a restaurant for years and after going through all the expensive knives somone gave me a rada all the other knives were disgarded and we only used rada and that all I use at home now. The tomato knife is wonderful.

I love cooking and love a good set of knives. However, friends of ours came over one night and we were all making dinner together when my friends husband accidently 'nipped' the tip of his finger - my friend flipped, yelling that she 'couldn't handle the blood' even though it was just a tiny tiny bit. I told her she better get use to it BEFORE they have kids.

I was cutting a bagel when I managed to stick the blade into my index finger bone. Happily our next door neighbor was a nurse, who took me to a hospital emergency room for stitches. Where I sat and sat, dripping on the floor, for 40 minutes until they finally located and woke the doctor, napping where no one could find him...
ReplyDeleteFirst day of university, I sliced open my thumb trying to open a box in my new dorm room. Luckily my uni had a hospital on campus. Five stitches later, I now have a scar that will forever remind me of the beginning of my academic career
ReplyDeleteRecently my husband and I have been arguing over how to sharpen knives. He read some article in Family Handyman magazine that has instructions to sharpen that are COMPLETELY not like I've ever been taught. I've banned him from touching my very nice knives.

I'll do funny because I'm not fond of scary knife stories... we had an all purpose knife that lived by the cutting board and got used for everything. Then, one day it came up missing it's tip (about 1/4"!). Then, I noticed a dark spot on the (white) cutting board! The tip was imbedded in the board. Hmmm, no one confessed but I have my suspicions!

In floral class I can recall looking up and seeing one girl crying and another girl that looked fine. I heard one of the girls got cut with there floral knife so I assumed it was the girl crying. Nope it was the girl that acted all fine and the girl crying felt bad that the other girl got cut.

I rarely wear shoes around the house, just socks, but happened to be wearing shoes a few weeks ago when I knocked a huge butcher knife off the island. The tip landed on my shoe. I don't want to think about what would have happened if I would have been shoeless!

My scariest knife story was when I was a lot younger I was trying to cut a watermelon and cut myself pretty bad! There is always a little fear when I cut one now!
ReplyDeleteMy dad always said a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one. Ha! A couple of Thanksgivings ago, I put a sharp knife to wash in a sink of soapy water. Busy talking with all the relatives, I forgot about it and almost sliced my finger off! It was a good lesson though. I won't ever do THAT again!!!
ReplyDeleteI finally got over my fear of knives when I had to use a saw last year while working as a volunteer on a house build for the poor. It's not so bad after all!
ReplyDeleteI tried to use my knife to crack ice - the ice was so hard the knife broke off the handle.

When I was 19, I was cutting a piece of cheese. I was too lazy to wash the dirty long knife, and instead tried to use a paring knife. Needless to say, my hand slipped right off the edge and I slashed my wrist something fierce. I felt like a total idiot - especially since it honestly looked like a suicide slash.
ReplyDeleteUm, yah. I walked around in long sleeves for a few weeks and always took the time to wash a knife after that!
Last year my hubby went to stab the bottom of a can of refried beans to help them slide out (providing an air hole) but he ended up stabbing his hand instead. OUCH!

ReplyDeletescariest... i sliced my fingers twice... with a plastic and a butter knife while trying to cut an orange :-/ jmmccarr@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteAll my knives are dull; and I can't tell you how many times I have cut myself with them. The worst is reaching in the knife drawer, and managing to impale myself on a knife. Really stupid!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, my mom almost cut off the tip of her thumb when cooking--that was very disturbing to see.

When I was three, my dad was supposed to be watching me while my mom went to the grocery store. My mom said that, when she got home with the groceries, I met her at the door with a knife and a block of cheese. I told her I was slicing the cheese for a snack. My dad was asleep on the couch.

My son walked up to me holding a knife...luckily it was plastic, but still freaked me out! Lol. I still have no idea how he found it or where it came from!
ReplyDeleteDon't believe the old adage - only dull knives cut. One very sharp pocket knife cut my pinky almost to the bone. Still have the scar and that was 48 years ago.

ReplyDeleteNot a knife but a blade...I was cutting on a light table with a straight edge and a blade and trimmed the side of my index finger off...first time it happened, I threw the piece away. The second time they made me get it sutured back on in ER. That was about 40 years ago.

ReplyDeleteI, myself have never had a crazy knife story thanks to steady hands, but unfortunately my fiancee has not been as lucky as I have. While I was away at school he decided he wanted to make salsa (which was odd because he NEVER cooks) but he must have had a wild hair to try and experiment and of course his "experiments" never end well. According to him he just glanced at the television for a second and during that second he sliced off the top of his ring finger!! The doctors were unable to sew it back on so he is missing part of his finger thanks to knives and television, but I'm getting used to his "special finger"!

During a complete remodel of the school wing of my congregation, the kitchen was a much-anticipated tear-down. The construction crew let us (the preschool staff) take apart whatever we wanted. I (the preschool administrator) drew a bullseye on the kitchen wall, selected our junkiest knives, and then had each teacher down to throw knives into the wall. No children were present, of course!

It wasn't with a kitchen knife... and it wasn't me. One evening, as soon as I walked in the door for work, my husband looks at me all serious like and says, "You need to go to Walgreens and get me this and this and this." I asked him why and he said that he cut himself. So I'm looking all over his hands, his arms and I see nothing. After pressing, he tells me that he dropped the knife and it landed tip down into his foot. He was ok, too small for stitches even, but I immediately thought of Adventures of Babysitting!
